Has the RAV4 finally become not boring? Certainly appears so.

For years, it was the Camry sedan that brought customers in droves to Toyota dealerships. However, times change and today the crossover rules while the sedan has been pushed aside. When it came time for Toyota to completely redesign its long-running and hot-selling RAV4 crossover, it knew it had to get everything right. The competition is tougher than ever, but Toyota also wanted to expand the RAV4’s appeal. In short, it had to become more manly as part of an effort to lure more male buyers. Has the all-new 2019 Toyota RAV4 accomplished this?

 

 

Let’s find out. The fifth-generation RAV4 could not look more different than the model it replaces, which lacked emotion. It was the refrigerator of crossovers if you will, and yet it was still the best-selling passenger vehicle in the US last year if you don’t count pickup trucks. But just look at the redesigned RAV4; it actually looks far more SUV-ish. The all-new sheet metal is quite a dramatic departure from before, with styling directly inspired by last year’s FT-AC Concept. We’d describe the new look as rugged. Note the more aggressive grille, fog light surrounds and wheel designs. The wheel arches have been angled off and are further augmented with black trim.

From the side, notice the creases beginning on the front doors and continuing through the rear doors to the C-pillar. The rear end continues this chiseled theme which, overall, works very well. At first glance, one could easily mistake the new RAV4 for a Jeep, save for the brand emblem. The 2019 RAV4 comes in three distinct trim levels: Adventure, Limited and XSE Hybrid. Interesting fact: the hybrid is the sportiest of the three when it comes to driving experience. More on that shortly. Riding on Toyota’s highly regarded TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform, which also underpins the latest Camry, the RAV4 previously rode on a compact car platform.

 

The change gives the RAV4 an additional 1.2 inches of wheelbase, slightly higher ground clearance, and a wider track. The wheels have also been shoved to the corners, enabling overall length to actually drop by 2.6 inches. That’s not a bad thing because the 2019 RAV4 now has a firmer, more powerful stance. Remember, more male buyers wanted. Helping to give it extra presence are available 19-inch wheels on higher level trims. Under the hood, the RAV4 comes standard with an all-new Dynamic Force 2.5-liter inline-four with direct and port injection and VVT-iE. This engine is also standard in the Camry, where it develops 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque.

Toyota has not released output figures just yet, but expect similar numbers. The old six-speed automatic transmission has been replaced by a new eight-speed gearbox. There are no turbo fours or V6s offered, but Toyota is adamant the new inline-four has class-leading output. For those who want not only improved fuel economy but also a sportier driving experience, there’s the XSE Hybrid. It starts with the same inline-four engine, but it’s connected to a hybrid system, called Toyota Hybrid System II. Official EPA figures have yet to be released. Once again, Toyota is confident the XSE Hybrid will have class-leading efficiency. One rumor claims it will achieve a 600-mile range.

The new RAV4 is also the first TNGA vehicle to receive optional (standard on Adventure and Limited trims) all-wheel drive. It’s actually a pretty trick system called Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with Driveshaft Disconnect. It sends up to 50 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels when needed, and can properly distribute that power to the left or right rear wheel for even better handling. The rear driveline disconnect feature allows for the AWD to be disabled when it’s not needed, with power instead of going to the front wheels only, thus improving fuel efficiency. There are two other AWD systems available on lower trim levels: AWD-ion the hybrid, and the non-dynamic torque vectoring system for the straight up gasoline-engined RAV4s.

As previously mentioned, XSE Hybrid promises to offer the sportiest driving experience of the three. Yes, really. Toyota went above and beyond here, equipping the XSE Hybrid with a sport-tuned suspension with tauter shock absorbers and springs. Toyota also wisely moved the battery to under the rear seat, which removed the cargo area “hump”, thus creating a flat floor and class-leading cargo capacity. Some very much welcomed styling highlights the XSE Hybrid’s sportier nature, such as standard two-tone exterior paint with black accents on the lower rocker panels, mirror caps, fog lamps, front end, and wheel arches. Those interested in off-roading, the RAV4 Adventure is for you.

It comes standard with high-rise roof rails, large over-fenders and those 19-inch wheels for a more outdoorsy look inspired by the Tacoma pickup. It also has a Multi-Terrain Select system that gives drivers the ability to maximize traction when driving through snow, mud, sand or rocks. A simple dial located in the center console controls those settings. Anyone seeking a more luxurious and refined experience will seek the RAV4 Limited. It also features those 19-inch wheels, but also comes with chrome accents, leather upholstery with contrasting stitching, 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with 2-way lumbar, a 7-inch multi-information display, and optional ventilated front seats and a panoramic roof.

All RAV4s are equipped with Toyota’s Entune 3.0 multimedia system located in a 7-inch touchscreen on top of the center stack. An 8-inch screen is optional. Both Apply CarPlay (no Android Auto?) and WiFi are also standard fares. There are a total of 11 speakers connected to the JBL sound system. The new interior is without question a step above the previous model. Everywhere you look you get the immediate sense of high-quality materials and splendid fit and finish throughout. Ergonomics have been improved, and headroom increases for second-row occupants. The third-row option has been eliminated. Toyota claims increased towing capacity as well, though no figure has been given. The outgoing RAV4 was capable of 3,500 pounds.

Standard safety includes eight airbags, pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, and the new lane tracing assist. Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 adds automatic emergency braking with nighttime pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection, along with lane keep assisting with Lane Tracing Assist. The manual parking is replaced by an electronic parking brake with full-speed dynamic stopping. Toyota has not announced 2019 RAV4 pricing, but don’t expect a big increase over the outgoing model, so figure a base price around $25,500. Gasoline-powered RAV4s will go on sale at the end of this year while the hybrid will hit the market in early 2019.

Imagine sitting in a car dealership: the scent of new cars, stale donuts, burnt coffee and free popcorn mixes with the hustle and bustle for a sensory overload. Excitement is in the air! You're giddy and you're also anxious. You've picked out the model you want—and the dealer just happens to have it in stock. You think you've agreed to a price, and you think that only a stack of papers to satisfy your bank and your state's department of motor vehicles stands between you and a happy drive home in a shiny new ride.

But wait! The dealer still has plenty of opportunities to take a few more bucks from your already thin-feeling wallet. And while there are certainly some great car dealers out there, consumer confidence remains low.

A recent survey by industry auditing firm Total Dealer Compliance (TDC) found that 70% of adults surveyed said that they believe new car dealers are unethical. TDC's ultimate goal is to have dealers display a code of ethics in their showrooms, but the firm admits such a move would be a mere baby step towards improving the overall experience.

To help you navigate your way through the car buying process, Car Leasing Concierge has put together a list of unethical tricks we've seen dealers try to pull, some of which may really surprise you. No automaker is immune to these tricks since dealers operate independently—and they're likely to stay that way, as any effort to create showrooms run by automakers has been squashed by dealer lobbying groups in many states.

1. You're handling what? Dealer handling fees!

Profit margins—the difference between what the dealer paid the manufacturer for the car and what they're charging you—are lower than ever on new cars. On some models-- especially less expensive cars or those that have sat around in a showroom for a long time-- the dealer may truly be making just a few hundred dollars! That could translate into a very slim profit for the dealer once the salesperson's commission has been paid out.

To make up for this, many dealers now charge their own, flat rate fee. It's sometimes called a handling fee, or processing fee, and in some markets it can be upwards of $800! Ostensibly, this fee is there to help the dealer recoup a few bucks for filing registration paperwork on behalf of you.

If you live in a metro area where dealer handling charges are the norm, it may be hard to avoid paying this hefty fee. That's why Car Leasing Concierge is such a breath of fresh air - no added fees means happy customers, and no dealer add-ons!

2. Sound the alarm! Dealer-installed alarm systems

Your new car may very well have an alarm system installed at the factory by the automaker. That alarm is probably pretty decent—but, if you find yourself parking in unsavory areas, you may consider adding an aftermarket alarm. And even if you don't mention this to the dealer, their finance department could offer one at a cut rate price.

As The Truth About Cars pointed out, an entire cottage industry exists that creates alarms that are, at best, simply ineffective. Depending on how they're installed, they could actually be a massive hinderance since dealers may not properly tap into a car's electrical wiring. If you're presented with an "offer" to buy one of these alarms, do your research.

Some unsavory dealers automatically install alarms on every car in their inventory! Run, don't walk, away! Even if you talk your way out of paying for the alarm, you're still saddled with a car that has been questionably modified in a way that very well could violate its factory warranty!!

3. Protecting nothing: Absolutely useless add-ons

A dealer may offer you some genuinely useful accessories—quality rubber winter floor mats and window tint come to mind. But then there's pinstriping, rust-preventing undercoating, paint sealant, door edge guards, etc.. We've even seen fabric protection listed as a dealer-installed item on a car with leather seats!

Almost none of these features serves any purpose whatsoever, and combined they can add hundreds, if not thousands, to the manufacturer's suggested retail price. So while the dealer may knock $800 off of a car's sticker price, they're making that—and more—up by charging you $1,000 for a useless "protection package."

By that same token, some automakers use distributors to service certain regions. To bolster their bottom line, those distributors also add options. While this practice isn't as egregious as it used to be, you should still be very, very wary of anything not installed at the factory.

4. Read the paperwork

When it comes down to signing on the dotted line (since there is a mountain of paperwork ahead of you), read everything closely. We've heard (and experienced) no shortage of horror stories centered around sitting in the finance office. Check carefully to make sure that the vehicle identification number (or VIN) of the car you're signing on is the one you test drove and decided to buy. Read any disclosures carefully; dealers are required by law to tell you anything out of the ordinary they might know about the car you're ready to buy (maybe it has had some paint work done because someone scraped it on a test drive).

And that low interest rate may not be as simple as you think. Dealers and banks work closely together, so it's worth asking the finance team if they're getting a kickback—or a referral fee—by sending you specifically to the financial institution to whom you'll be writing (a lot of) checks to in the near future. Also, you can always ask what, on top of the principal and interest, you'll be paying for over the course of the loan since there may be additional charges not clearly spelled out in the terms.

5: Above and (too far) beyond: Recommended service intervals

You've already bought your dream ride and, a few months later, it's time for an oil change. A quick look through the owner's manual (read it!) to the maintenance guide (also read it!) shows that, at 5,000 miles, you're due for an oil change and a tire rotation. But when you pull into the service bay, the friendly adviser whips out a chart of additional maintenance "recommendations." The dealer wants to change the differential fluid, flush the coolant, install new wiper blades, and-- our favorite-- replace the air filter. Suddenly a $50 visit has become a $500 wallet-grabber and you're left thinking that the cheap-to-maintain car you just bought is going to cost you a grand a year in basic maintenance.

Yes, these things do need to be done... someday. Today may or may not be that day.

To be certain, wear items like wiper blades and air filters do need to be replaced eventually, and nearly every fluid or oil should be periodically changed. But many dealers recommend service intervals that go well above what the manufacturer suggests—and automakers are cautious about suggesting service in the first place. We put a lot more trust in what a carmaker's engineers have put into a maintenance guide than what a dealer suggests. If you detect any hint of unscrupulous behavior, refer to your owner's manual.

We'll say it one more time: Read the manual. Follow the automaker's recommendations. They built it, so shouldn't they know how to service it?

Death Risk to Leaving Children and Pets in Hot Cars Happens Fast and Far Too Often!

It's hotter than you may think!

Each year, with warm weather, sadly comes tragic cases of children being left in hot cars and dying from heat stroke. In just 2016 alone, 16 children have already died in hot cars, and there have been many other near fatalities! But hot cars do not need to be a danger to kids, if parents can keep their cool.

On average, 37 children die of heat stroke each year after being left in a hot car, according to KidsAndCars.org. While it may be hard to imagine, many deaths have occurred when over-stressed parents forgot that their children were in the backseat.

Hot-car tragedies often occur because there has been a recent change in a driver's routine. If stressed, a parent or caregiver can sometimes forget that their child is even in the car.  Worse yet, some consciously leave children "just for a minute" to do an errand (running into a store, etc.) not realizing how quickly the temperature in a car can rise to dangerous levels. (see chart above)

Even if it's only 70 degrees outside, a car can quickly heat to more than 104 degrees +. Jennifer Stockburger, Consumer Reports' Director of Operations, says researchers are working on devices such as weight sensors or heartbeat monitors to detect the presence of a child in the backseat, but currently there is nothing to warn a driver that a child has been left behind. Though some child seat manufacturers are now working to incorporate technologies into the child seat itself.

If you take time out to have kids, then take the time to look after them!

Tips to Prevent Hot-Car Tragedies

  • Simple rule: Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, not even for a minute. In addition to this danger, it is against the law in many states and jurisdictions.

  • Schedule a cell-phone reminder to yourself to be sure you’ve gotten the children safely to their destination.

  • Make it a habit to check your vehicle each time after existing that all occupants have left or have been carried out when unloading. If you lock the door with a key, rather than a remote, it forces one last look in the car before leaving it.

  • Always lock your car and keep keys and remotes away from children.

  • To serve as a reminder, keep a stuffed animal on the front passenger seat when carrying a child in the backseat.

  • As an insurance policy - place something in the backseat that you would need, such as a purse, briefcase or cell phone.

  • Have a plan that your childcare provider will call you if your child does not show up.

  • If you see a child alone in a car, especially if they seem hot, call 911 immediately to help get them out.

Dangers of leaving your dog in a hot car!

Every year, dogs suffer and die when their owners make the mistake of leaving them in a parked car—even for “just a minute”—while they run an errand. Parked cars are even worse deathtraps for dogs: On a 78-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 100 and 120 degrees in just minutes, and on a 90-degree day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 160 degrees in less than 10 minutes.

Animals can sustain brain damage or even die from heatstroke in just 15 minutes. Beating the heat is extra tough for dogs because they can only cool themselves by panting and by sweating through their paw pads.

If you see a dog left alone in a hot car, take down the car’s color, model, make, and license plate number. Have the owner paged in the nearest building or business, or call local humane authorities or police. Have someone keep an eye on the dog. DO NOT leave the scene until the situation has been resolved.

If the authorities are unresponsive or too slow and the dog’s life appears to be in imminent danger, find a witness (or several) who will back up your assessment, take steps to remove the suffering animal from the car, and then wait for authorities to arrive.

Tips on what to do! 

Watch for heatstroke symptoms such as restlessness, excessive thirst, thick saliva, heavy panting, lethargy, lack of appetite, dark tongue, rapid heartbeat, fever, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and lack of coordination. If a dog shows any of these symptoms, get him or her out of the heat, preferably into an air-conditioned vehicle, and then to a veterinarian immediately. If you are unable to transport the dog yourself, take him or her into an air-conditioned building if possible and call animal control: Tell them it is an emergency.

Provide water to drink, and if possible spray the dog with a garden hose or immerse him or her in a tub of cool (but not iced) water for up to two minutes in order to lower the body temperature gradually. You can also place the dog in front of an electric fan. Applying cool, wet towels to the groin area, stomach, chest, and paws can also help. Be careful not to use ice or cold water, and don’t over cool the animal.

When walking your dog, keep in mind that if it feels hot enough to fry an egg outside, it probably is. When the air temperature is 86 degrees, the asphalt can reach a sizzling 135 degrees — more than hot enough to cook an egg in five minutes. And it can do the same to our canine companions’ sensitive foot pads.

On an 87-degree day, asphalt temperatures can reach 140 degrees, hot enough to cause burns, permanent damage and scarring after just one minute of contact. Rapid burns and blistering can occur at 150 degrees. Hot sidewalks, pavement and parking lots can not only burn paws, they also reflect heat onto dogs’ bodies , increasing their risk of deadly heatstroke.

If you wouldn’t put your dog in a frying pan, please don’t make him or her walk on hot pavement. Always test the pavement with your hand before setting out (too hot to touch is too hot for Spot), walk early in the morning or late at night when it’s cooler, carry water and take frequent breaks in shady spots and never make dogs wear muzzles that restrict their breathing

Remember to stay cool in the heat of the moment-- it may save a life!
